Raiders to deliver veteran security Damarious Randall

Damarious Randall, signed by the Raiders as an unrestricted free agent as a potential starter at free safety, will be released Friday according to multiple reports.

Given that Randall, signed on April 7, marked an agreement which apparently promised him $1.5 million this season, the exchange comes as in any event a minor shock.

The news was first reported by the NFL Network.

The thinking was Randall, who struggled at cornerback last season with Cleveland, would play a center field role in the Raiders’ defense. General manager Mike Mayock said he preferred Randall as a safety rather than cornerback coming out of Arizona State.

“This defense kind of needed a guy in the middle of the field that could roam sideline-to-sideline making plays and I feel like I can bring that to this defense,” Randall said in a Zoom teleconference on Aug. 13.

The Raiders were already thin at safety, and could go with just three on the 53-man roster when it is announced Saturday — Johnathan Abram, Erik Harris and Jeff Heath. Also on the roster is Dallin Leavitt, a safety who played primarily on special teams last season. Slot corner Lamarcus Joyner also has experience as a deep safety, but the Raiders as yet have shown no inclination to move him from the nickel position.

The reasoning was Randall, who battled at cornerback last season with Cleveland, would assume a middle field job in the Raiders’ safeguard. Senior supervisor Mike Mayock said he favored Randall as wellbeing as opposed to cornerback emerging from Arizona State.
